Chicago Blackhawks get gut punched again, lose out on top coaching target: Report

Chicago Blackhawks forward Connor Bedard (98) reacts as Vancouver Canucks forward Nils Aman (88) and forward Teddy Blueger (53) celebrate Aman’s goal in the third period at Rogers Arena.

The Chicago Blackhawks‘ coaching search is going miserably as the calendar turns to May. The Blackhawks are seeking to replace Luke Richardson, who was fired in December. Richardson and interim coach Anders Sorenson were in charge of a Chicago team that finished with the second-worst record in the league.

The Blackhawks had David Carle on their radar in April, but the highly sought-after head coaching candidate withdrew his name from consideration to stay with the University of Denver, a program where he’s won two national titles.

The Blackhawks saw another big-name hit the market this week when the Pittsburgh Penguins mutually parted ways with Mike Sullivan. The two-time Stanley Cup champion head coach was considered a top target for Chicago.

Per Emily Kaplan of ESPN, the New York Rangers are close to signing a deal to make Sullivan their next head coach.

“The New York Rangers are in advanced contract talks to name Mike Sullivan head coach, sources told @KevinWeekes & me,” Kaplan posted on X. “It is expected to be one of the richest coaching contracts in NHL history.”

The Blackhawks have now seen two prime coaches choose other organizations in the last week. Sullivan is looking for a bag.

One has to wonder if the Blackhawks weren’t prepared to offer a rich enough contract to entice Sullivan or Carle to join Chicago.
