OTL: The Browns Continue to Brown

How is it that the Baltimore Ravens drafted a defenseman with over 800 games of experience, 500 points and two all-star nods?

Oh wait, sorry, that’s a different Mike Green. My mistake, moving on.

I don’t have much analysis to offer on the Ravens draft class. I like it. They landed the BPA several times and addressed multiple key needs on defense. I now have to listen to my boss gush about his Georgia Bulldogs, but hey, if Malaki Starks ends up being, forgive the expression, a dog, in Baltimore, that is a sacrifice I’m willing to make.

In any case, there’s one storyline from the draft that continues to eat at me, and I just can’t figure out what happened here.

What exactly happened with Shedeur Sanders? I’ll get to the team that drafted him in a minute, but why was Sanders a bigger story than the former zero-star prospect going number one overall? The fact that Sanders remained undrafted well into day three didn’t help. Despite how polarizing Sanders was as a draft prospect, no one had him falling that far. Then the tin foil hats came out.

The legions of X accounts and media personalities crying conspiracy against Shedeur seemed strange. This entire situation was so weird. Throw in these morons, and it just gets even worse.

No need. Absolutely no need. The NFL might need to change they way do things during the draft in terms of how they contact the draftees. The Sanders family didn’t deserve this.

Anyway, back to business: what exactly are the Browns doing?

A Ravens division rival drafting Sanders is notable for many reasons, but perhaps not for the reasons that Cleveland originally intended. I got back into the office during the third round, and was stunned that Sanders was still on the board. I mentioned Dillon Gabriel and how interesting it would be if he came off the board first. I was curious where the former Sooner would land.

Then the Browns took him.

I was stunned. Then, the next day, the next domino fell. Sanders went to Cleveland in round five.

So that leaves the Browns with five QBs: Deshaun Watson, Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, Gabriel and Sanders. Watson’s out for the year, so that makes four. They need to cut/move one more. My guess is Pickett. Sanders won’t start week one, the Browns will lose games, and reporters will ask when Stefanski will put in the rookie from Colorado. The Browns deal with another media circus, and someone probably gets fired at the end of the year.

One day, books will be written about how the Watson trade derailed a promising, young football team. Until then, we as Ravens fans should be grateful that we have one of the best quarterbacks in football.

We should also be thankful that one of their division rivals can’t seem to get out of their own way.
