Boone's Decisions Come Down To Honoring Big Contracts

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

And the worst part? It’s costing us games.

I don’t want to hear that it’s a marathon and not a sprint. Last night’s game was won, until Boone made a bad decision… again.

At this point, expecting the Yankees to make a smart decision is like expecting a pigeon to do calculus. And sure enough, last night’s disaster-class against San Diego delivered another reminder: this team is being held together with delusion and duct tape.

Let’s start with Devin Williams. The idea that he was “ready” to return is almost as laughable as Aaron Boone’s postgame quotes. Williams was supposed to be this dominant force out of the bullpen—the guy who put up a 1.83 ERA over six years with the Brewers. Instead, since putting on pinstripes, he’s been a tire fire. He’s been involved in each of the Yankees’ last five losses. Just a week ago, he served up seven runs in two appearances like he was working concessions for the other team. But sure, throw him into a 3-0 game in the 8th and act shocked when it implodes, Aaron Boone. That’s not mismanagement—that’s malpractice.

Then there’s Anthony Volpe. Apparently, his shoulder popped recently. You’d think that might earn him a couple days off to, you know, not disintegrate on the field. But no—Boone and the front office shove him right back into the lineup like it’s a HomeGoods return bin. The result? A lifeless 0-for-3 performance that shocked absolutely no one.

Let’s talk numbers. Volpe is batting .233 this season and .228 for his career. That’s not the future of the franchise—it’s a dead end. And yet the Yankees handle him like he’s Derek Jeter reincarnated. He’s not Derek Jeter. Hell he’s not even Fred Jeter. Meanwhile, they couldn’t wait to turn Gleyber Torres into a scapegoat, only to watch him flourish in Detroit with a .291 average and 4 homers. But sure, keep telling us Volpe is “about to break out.”

It’s the same tired script every time: “We know he’s struggling, but he’s close.” Translation? “We’ve got too much money tied up in him to admit we screwed up.”

Let’s not forget Oswald Peraza—remember him? Better glove, healthy shoulder, just as likely to go 0-for-3 but without risking a long-term injury flare-up. But he doesn’t have the Yankees’ golden boy halo, so he rots on the bench while Volpe sleepwalks through plate appearances.

And then there’s Boone, the captain of this sinking ship. His take on Devin Williams after last night’s meltdown? Brace yourself:

“The biggest thing is command and being ahead and not putting guys on. Stuff is there. Stuff’s fine. I do believe he’ll get on a roll and be lights out and be dominant.”

What game is this guy watching, dickhead? More importantly, how does Boone still have a job? Boone’s optimism isn’t encouraging—it’s delusional. “Stuff is fine”? Devin Williams couldn’t get out of an inning with GPS, a sherpa, and divine intervention. But sure, let’s keep running him out there to watch another 3-run lead evaporate like dignity at a reality show audition.

And the problem runs deeper than Boone. The Yankees organization is obsessed with putting guys out there because they have hefty contracts, yet the players aren’t showing they can play to their true potential. If you make big money, you get all the rope in the world apparently—even if you hang the team with it. But if you’re a mid-tier guy with potential and make a mistake? Goodbye. That’s not strategy. That’s sabotage. Horrible strategy. The Yankees have this ass backwards.

One game doesn’t make a season, but it sure as hell tells a story. A story of bad decisions, tone-deaf leadership, and a front office allergic to accountability. This team isn’t contending for a championship, folks. Aaron Judge is wasting his time in the Boone Era. The Yankees are contending for the biggest waste of payroll in baseball.

The Yankees aren’t cursed—they’re clueless. And until they admit they’ve picked the wrong players, hired the wrong manager, and doubled down on the wrong philosophies, nothing’s going to change. The players—and the fans—deserve better.

Until then? They’re not chasing a title. They’re chasing their own tail.
