Chicago Bears’ offensive line addition named best NFL Draft value

Bears General Manager Ryan Poles

After allowing a league-high 68 sacks in 2024, the Chicago Bears have left no stone unturned when it comes to improving their offensive line. That didn’t change in the 2025 NFL Draft.

With the No. 56 overall pick in the second-round, the Bears selected Boston College tackle Ozzy Trapilo. Standing a monstrous 6-foot-8, Trapilo was a force at right tackle for the Eagles. Now, he is expected to become a key building block for Chicago’s offensive line.

The Bears didn’t originally own the No. 56 overall pick, as they shuffled around the board on day two. But when Trapilo’s name was called, Adam Jahns of The Athletic believes it was Chicago’s best value pick of the entire 2025 NFL Draft.

“Trapilo was the smart choice at No. 56 for the Bears, who picked Texas A&M defensive tackle Shemar Turner soon after at No. 62,” Jahns wrote. “This year was deeper for defensive linemen. By taking Trapilo first, the Bears beat the drop in tier for his position, especially when it came to the value and his place on their board.”

“As a second-round pick, Trapilo is here to push left tackle Braxton Jones and right tackle Darnell Wright,” Jahns continued. “Trapilo played on both sides at Boston College. The Bears will see where everyone fits best in training camp.”

Ozzy Trapilo gives Chicago Bears another strong lineman

The biggest question surrounding Trapilo is where he will play. He broke out at right tackle, but Darnell Wright has been dominant at that position the past two seasons. Chicago does have a potential hole at left tackle depending on Braxton Jones’ health. Will the Bears move Trapilo to the left side, or have him remain on the right while Wright moves to the left?

That’s a question that will be answered in training camp. But for now, Chicago is simply excited to add another standout tackle to their offensive line.

Trapilo appeared in 43 games over his four seasons at Boston College. He was named the starter at left tackle entering his redshirt sophomore season before moving over to right for his final two seasons. The switch proved to be extremely beneficial, as Trapilo ended his time with the Eagles as a First-team All-ACC nominee.

The tackle will need to bulk up and further refine his technique to fully take on the NFL challenge. However, Chicago thinks he’ll be ready to be thrown into the fire sooner rather than later. Furthermore, Trapilo received a comparison to San Francisco 49ers lineman Colton McKivitz before the draft by NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein. McKivitz has started all 17 games the past two seasons.

“Tall tackle prospect with NFL bloodlines and a noticeable improvement in play strength last season. The run-blocking tape falls below the protection tape due to leverage and adjustment limitations we frequently see with taller tackles,” Zierlein wrote. “Trapilo won’t generate much movement in the run game, but good upper-body power helps him neutralize the edge. He operates with sound pass sets, active hands and excellent arm extension.”

“He has a good feel for pocket depth with an ability to ride rushers over the top, but he will get beat by inside counters and speed-to-power rushers at times,” Zierlein continued. “Trapilo could operate as a swing tackle early on but his potential in pass protection gives him a good chance to become a starter.”

True for most of the Bears’ roster, training camp will be extremely telling for Trapilo. The Bears must figure out not only where he will play, but if he is ready to start immediately. But even if Trapilo starts in a swing tackle role, his arrow is pointing up in Chicago. As the Bears continue to flesh out their offensive line under head coach Ben Johnson, Trapilo will be a major part of the plans for the foreseeable future.
