Chicago Cubs manager gives wake-up call to struggling infielder

The Chicago Cubs were able to overcome an error that led to three runs in the team’s 11-10 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers in front of 36,425 fans at Wrigley Field on Tuesday night. Rookie infielder Gage Workman’s mistake allowed the Dodgers to take an 8-7 lead in the seventh inning.

Workman made an error when he failed to field a ground ball with the bases loaded. One run scored on that play. Two more were scored via a double on the next at-bat. The Dodgers wound up taking a 10-7 lead before they could get out of the inning.

The error was Workman’s second of the game, as he missed a ground ball in the first inning.

Cubs fans online were calling for the Rule 5 infielder to be cut after the game.

Following the win, Counsell told reporters that Workman made an “unfortunate” mistake in the seventh inning.

“Yeah, there was some mistakes tonight,” Counsell said via video from Marquee Sports Network. “The first ball to lead off the game was hit on the end of the bat. So, probably took a weird hop. The second play, it’s got to be made. Not an easy play, but it’s got to be made.

“That was an unfortunate part of the game. I thought the rest of the game, we did a lot of things well, but that was unfortunate.”

Workman didn’t help on offense, going 0-of-3 at-bat with a strikeout. He’s batting .214/.267/.286 this season.

The Cubs had Workman at third base after they sent Matt Shaw to Iowa after his struggles on offense to begin his MLB career. Counsell is giving Workman a warning to clean up his mistakes, or he could be headed back to the Detroit Tigers.
