Chicago Bears trade down ‘discussions’ are getting real before draft: Report

Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Poles might have said too much on Tuesday when he suggested his staff was preparing for a “wild” Thursday night.

“I think this one is gonna be a little wild,” Poles said. “But we’re going to be prepared for the scenarios that pop up.”

The Bears enter the draft with the No. 10 pick. Following a busy March, which saw the front office address their biggest offseason needs by adding three starting interior offensive linemen and two starting defensive linemen, Chicago has a range of options they can use that pick on.

Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty is reportedly the player the Bears desire at No. 10. If he’s not on the board when Poles picks, the Bears have been heavily linked to Penn State tight end Tyler Warren or a few prospects in the trenches.

If they draft at No. 10 at all.

Teams in the top 10 are exploring trading back

Per Dianna Russini of The Athletic, “most” of the teams drafting in the top 10, sans the Tennessee Titans, have discussed trading back in the first round. More talk is expected to happen before and during the first round.

“Most of the teams picking in the top 10, outside of Tennessee, have discussed trading out and are open to more discussions with teams as we get closer to Thursday night,” Russini wrote.

Given Poles’ statement about a “wild” draft night, it appears the Bears are one of those teams that have been discussing trade scenarios for Thursday night.

If a preferred player like Jeanty isn’t on the board at No. 10, Chicago could add draft capital for the second or third round, where this class is expected to be stronger.
