PERFORMANCE GRADE: 4.18 POTENTIAL GRADE: 4.55

Projection: Starting outside CB in a defense that uses more Man coverage, probably starts as a CB2 but could develop to compete with the better receivers in the NFL given his physical tools. The speed, explosion and hip mobility help him both at the line of scrimmage and in staying in phase downfield. He can give up some separation at the top of his routes against those bigger receivers with better play strength, and those savvier receivers can set him up, but his athleticism gets him out of most trouble. He could become a more plus run defender but he will do what he needs to do to maintain the integrity of the run defense. Has the tools and coverage skills to start immediately as a solid outside CB and the ceiling to develop into more. Draft Projection: Late Round 1/Early Round 2 (Grinding the Mocks)

Ravens Fit: He’s a middling fit for the Ravens. He is a starting outside CB so no complex decisions about his role, he starts outside and allows Humphrey to play more inside as his career goes on. He also works because he’s versatile in terms of the types of receiver that he can cover, as the Ravens don’t play matchups with their CBs. Having said all that, he doesn’t quite have the understanding of Zone coverage that would allow the Ravens to be as multiple as they would like. And he isn’t a Raven-like run defender as he isn’t particularly aggressive. I think his talent as a potential outside CB might be too much to pass up for the Ravens searching at the position.

Overall Fit 3/5

Evaluation

Disrupting the WR Release

Excellent in disrupting at the line of scrimmage. He excels most in soft press where he can match angles with all but the most explosive and savvy receivers. These types can gain a small advantage in their release but he does have the recovery speed to close that back down. He has fluid hips, can open/flip his hips quickly and smoothly and stay in the receivers hip pocket. Only a particularly good and well set up move from a particularly explosive receiver can cause him some trouble in soft press. He is patient and also demonstrates some physicality when he jams. He has solid length and uses it to disrupt the receiver when getting physical with them, he has good timing and placement with his hands. When he’s in off or bail coverage, he’s wary of the receiver getting caught in his blind spot and can keep him out of it. He has the ability to flip his hips quickly and turn and run downfield with all types of receiver. He is also good in catch-man where he is able to get his hands on all types of receiver to stop them getting a clean release. He is patient at the line of scrimmage, backs himself and his movement skills for good reason. The only time you see him more consistently struggle is when he has to make a flat-footed read, when he can be set up by better processing receivers.

Taking Away Targets from the WR

In most situations he can take targets away from the Wide Receiver in man coverage. His transitions are excellent, his mechanics are outstanding, his hip fluidity allows him to turn with ease, and he drives on the football with explosion. He has great technique and outstanding reactive athleticism that combine to allow him to stay in phase on most types of route. He has an ability to read the receiver’s intentions on two-step routes and can stop on a dime. He’ll also work back to the football with the receiver. He can stay in phase on vertical routes owing to his excellent long speed. When a two-step route turns into a square cut and he has to decelerate from high speed on digs or deep outs, he is susceptible to being eased out at the catch point by a receiver looking to use their play strength to win some separation at the top of a route. This can also be true on 180 degree 2 step breaks but only against bigger bodies like Tight Ends who he did cover at times. He also has a tendency to get a bit grabby when a receiver crosses his face on a route with a vertical cut like a Post. Most of the time, his strong footwork and long speed keep him in phase or ensure he only gives up momentary separation at the top of the route when facing a receiver who wins with play strength. He is good in bajo coverage and works well in tandem with his teammates in Man coverage. Where he can improve is his awareness and processing in Zone coverage, he is liable to be distracted too long by the first receiver entering his Zone, and allows other receivers to be targeted when he is manipulated by higher processing QBs.

Making a Play on the Ball

His ball skills are excellent, his best trait is easily his ability to locate the football in the air downfield when he’s locked up in phase. He has consistently outstanding timing, be it on shorter routes like slants or on jump balls, he gets to the football on time with remarkable consistency. He times his jumps well for jump balls and uses his long arms to get his hands on the football. He drives on slants even when he gives up cushion and uses his explosion and timing to make a play on the football. His hands are consistently accurate when targeted on in and out-breaking routes in short and intermediate areas when in phase, and he has a lot of on-ball production in the previous year because of it. As he locates the ball so well in the air, he is a threat to pick off underthrown balls but he doesn’t yet process the game quickly enough to create interceptions on his own consistently.

Defending the Run and Tackling

He is a disciplined force player and you can see him take on Wide Receiver blocks with sound technique. He could use his hands to get off those blocks more and make plays on the ball carrier when at the point of attack. He flashes the ability to get involved in the run game and when it’s unmistakeably his responsibility, he will tackle all types of runner in traffic. He’ll also get involved on outside runs when he’s the force player and has the explosion to get underneath blocks. He will on occasion use his shoulder and show good technique, but too often he looks to wait for the runner and catch him with his arms too high, he could be more decisive in the hits he makes and he would make more consistent tackles. He also isn’t the most aggressive run defender and can be too quick to let others take responsibility for getting the ball carrier to the ground. He is an adequate run defender currently and he could be more of a plus run defender at the position.

Ravens Draft Pick Comp
Nate Wiggins without the very top-end elite speed.
