Angel Reese suggested her Chicago Sky teammates weren’t supportive in 2024

Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese (5) looks on during the first half of a WNBA game against the New York Liberty at Wintrust Arena.

Angel Reese is hoping for a much different second season in the WNBA with the Chicago Sky. The league’s leader in rebounds for 2024 is back in training camp this week with a lot of new faces on the roster and new head coach Tyler Marsh.

The Sky had reported drama with the Chennedy Carter, the team’s leading scorer in 2024. Carter is no longer with the team and head coach Teresa Weatherspoon was fired at the conclusion of he season after failing to deal with escalating tension between Carter and the locker room.

Per Zoe Grossman of Marquee Sports Network, Reese made a couple of comments on Sunday that alluded to the star athlete not feeling supported by the team in her rookie season.

“It’s just a breath of fresh air for somebody to have your back,” Reese said of being with her new teammates at training camp. “That’s the most important thing — being around a great group.”

The Sky added veterans Courtney Vandersloot, Ariel Atkins, and Kia Nurse in the offseason. Reese said she wanted to give Chicago’s No. 11 pick in the WNBA draft, Hailey Van Lith, support that she didn’t receive in 2024.

“I know there’s a lot of pressure on her (Van Lith) from the outside,” Reese said. “I love her, and I love being able to be here for her in this moment. Last year was tough for me because I didn’t have a lot of that, so I’m just being a big sister to her.”

Reese averaged 13.6 points and 13.1 rebounds for a Sky team that finished 13-27 on the season and missed the playoffs.

Reese thinks Marsh is helping to instill confidence in her before the upcoming season.

“I had a great first year, but there are things I want to continue to work on,” Reese said. “Coach Tyler has done a great job putting that confidence in me.”

The Sky need Reese to gain confidence in 2025. They’re counting on her to be the same defender and rebounder she was in her rookie season. She also must make strides in her offensive game if Chicago is to reach the next level and become a playoff contender.
