18,000 pounds of sausage and sliced meat products recalled because of excess sodium nitrite
Smith Packing, LLC, of Utica, NY, is recalling 18,792 pounds of various ready-to-eat sausage and sliced meat and poultry products because of sodium nitrite levels exceeding the regulatory limit, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).
The issue was discovered after Smith Packing notified FSIS of consumer complaints reporting off-taste and off-color products. The affected ready-to-eat sausage and sliced meat and poultry items were produced on various dates between Feb. 19, 2025, and April 24, 2025.
These items were shipped to institutional and retail locations in New York. FSIS is concerned that some products may remain in consumers’ or institutions’ refrigerators or freezers.
The products subject to recall bear establishment number “EST. 4578” or “P-4578” inside the USDA mark of inspection. These items were shipped to institutional and retail locations in New York.

As of the announcement, there have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to the consumption of these products.
Consumers and institutions who have purchased these products are urged not to consume or use them. The products should be discarded or returned to the place of purchase.
FSIS is conducting recall effectiveness checks to ensure that Smith Packing notifies its customers and that the recalled products are removed from the market.
About sodium nitrite concerns
Excessive levels of sodium nitrite, a preservative commonly used in cured meats, can pose health risks, potentially causing symptoms such as nausea, dizziness or more severe reactions in sensitive individuals.
