Multi-level marketing: government style
Although government agencies (and the legislative branches) are past masters at scams and double-dealing, we do have to remember that the governments are not the only con artists out there.
While it is possible for multi-level marketing to be on the up-and-up, we know that many organizations which employ multi-level marketing strategies are in reality con jobs. Various forms of Ponzi schemes, fake come-ons, and other tactics are far too common. Of course, any form of business organization can be twisted and used for ill-gotten gains.
Generally, though, the attractions of multi-level marketing – and its attractiveness to scumbags who prey on others – isn’t able to be used to their advantage by governments. But…
Has the FedGov found a way? The daily AUSA (Association of the US Army (a private membership organization) recently published this little tidbit:
Army leaders are extending the Soldier Referral Program, which provides incentives to troops who refer a successful recruit. Under the program, privates to privates first class are eligible for a single rank advancement of one grade if they refer someone who enlists and ships to basic training or one-station unit training. Participating specialists and sergeants are eligible for promotion points by earning the new U.S. Army Recruiting Ribbon.
Promotion, of course, means an increase in pay. But theoretically and in good military practice, promotion is based on demonstrated skills and qualifications, and those promoted are expected to have demonstrated their ability and accept the responsibility of increased rank. For centuries, promotion even in the junior enlisted ranks has been based on specific standards. Has the soldier demonstrated the skills needed of a soldier of that rank? Has the soldier shown they are responsible and worthy of being promoted? Has the soldier gained the day-to-day experience needed to be part of the organization: the team?
We submit that the ability to cozen someone – even a friend or relative – into enlisting is not a combat or combat support skill that deserves promotion. Given the problems with recruitment, such might merit a monetary reward – one time. A ribbon to award the person who is useful in that way might be appropriate. (But don’t get us started on the continued decline in value and status of awards and ribbons.)
The last thing a platoon sergeant or platoon leader should want is a PFC who wears that rank only because they fast-talked someone into joining up. But may or may not have the skills and experience we expect of a senior private. Whether in garrison, exercises, or combat.
This is yet another example of how the American military has declined because of the poor leadership – both in uniform and in the civilian hierarchy. Not just the unlamented Uncle Joe, but in the Trump 1.0 regime, the Obummer years, and the Bush years. This is more than just social engineering; it is attempting to paper over the decline in how military service is viewed. Therefore, we see that the value of those in the service to carry out their only legitimate function is reduced more and more.
We honestly do not expect the current regime to do much about this particular program. And many of the other defects the American military system suffers.
