The Chicago White Sox add valuable depth by claiming a 25-year-old pitcher

The Chicago White Sox have heard the fans’ cries and have responded by calling up first baseman Tim Elko, who has been raking down in Triple-A. Elko joining the White Sox will add a boost of power, and hopefully add a bit of a spark to a lineup that has been dormant for most of the season.

The White Sox could use all the talent they can get, as they are on pace to tie or pass their loss record from last season. The White Sox’s search for talent hasn’t just come from within, but outside the organization, as they’ve scoured the waiver wire for players who can fill out or add value to the roster.

That latter process of adding players has helped the White Sox, as they have recently acquired another player off waivers to hopefully add value to their roster.

Before tonight’s game against the Miami Marlins, the White Sox announced that they have claimed right-handed pitcher Yoendrys Gómez from the Dodgers. To make room for him on the roster, the White Sox announced they have released outfielder Greg Jones.

Jones was an expendable player, as he was one of the players who were a part of the White Sox taxi squad whenever an injury occurred. Jones had no hits in two at-bats for the White Sox and slashed .145/.254/.258 for an OPS of .512 in 16 games with the Charlotte Knights.

What does Gómez bring to the White Sox bullpen?

Gómez’s value will be from the standpoint that he’s a young arm (25 years old), who could develop into a decent bullpen arm. Gómez has seen action this season with the New York Yankees as well as with the Dodgers, where he had a 1-1 record with a 2.70 ERA in 10.0 innings with the Yankees and a 14.54 ERA in 4.1 innings with the Dodgers.

Gómez has a four-pitch mix, which includes a four-seam fastball that he uses 50% of the time, a sweeper (26%), a curve (20%), and a changeup (4%). Hopefully, the White Sox will be getting the pitcher that Gómez was when he was with the Yankees. If he can be that pitcher, then the White Sox could have a nice piece for the bullpen on their hands.
