Green Pick Triggers Blues in RavensFlock

It’s interesting how some fans are throwing shade on the Ravens for their selection of Mike Green out of Marshall University with 59th overall pick. Projected to be a top 15-20 pick by most draft publications, Green’s precipitous fall stems from sexual allegations and his responses to said allegations when questioned about them.

Word is that some teams took Green off their board and typically, that’s a path the Ravens normally choose when character red flags rear their ugly heads. But this time, the Ravens brass did something unpredictable. They dug a little deeper into these sexual allegations and picked a tarnished player with first-round grades late in the second round. The response from fans is split.

Some love the pick. Others loathe it, claiming that it flies in the face of the Ravens “zero tolerance” policy as it relates to sexually related offenses. The objectors might even add that such picks are normally turned in by the Chiefs or the Bengals, teams that are averse to character issues, alleged or otherwise.

But back to the Ravens…

Eric DeCosta covets draft capital. Those draft picks represent front office gold. So, he’s not going to risk a 2nd-round pick without doing a little research. You can rest assured that the Ravens heavily vetted Green, his family, classmates, teammates, coaches and teachers. They brought Green in to spend a day at The Castle to get to know him better – to see if he would fit the culture that the club has carefully nurtured, particularly John Harbaugh.

And apparently, they were comfortable enough to invest pick No. 59 in a player who fills a need and did so in a very patient and calculated way. So, let’s give EDC some flowers for his savage gamesmanship. But still, there are those who remain critical of the pick because of the sexual allegations.

Let’s dive into the term “sexual allegations”.

Sexual allegations refer to accusations of sexual misconduct, which encompass a broad range of unwelcome sexual behaviors. This includes behaviors considered inappropriate on an individual or societal level, as well as actions that constitute sexual harassment or criminal sexual assault. These accusations often arise in situations where there’s a power imbalance or where sexual behavior is inappropriate given the context.

Obviously “sexual allegations” is a broad encompassing term. It may refer to someone who believes they were inappropriately touched, and it could reach as far as rape.

In an article posted by The Athletic it was revealed that, “The Charlottesville Police Department [it was notified] on Aug. 29, 2022, of an alleged sexual assault involving Green that occurred around 1 a.m. three days prior on West Main Street in Charlottesville. There were no reported injuries nor any damaged or stolen property, according to Charlottesville Police Sgt. Chris Huber.

“’The investigation of the case has been suspended,’ Huber wrote [in an email].”

So, there was no case. Nothing for law enforcement to pursue that would end in Green paying some criminal price. But he has paid a price in the court of public opinion, in the arena of the cancel culture and in his bank account. Had Green been picked in the 17-18 range of the first round, he would have earned a contract in the neighborhood of $18.5M, with a 5th year option to boot. As the 59th overall, Green’s rookie deal will be roughly $7.5M with no 5^th year option. That’s substantive!

Green’s response to the Ravens selection was real. It screamed both relief and joy. It suggested that despite the noise around him, the Ravens were willing to give him a second chance. Now it’s up to Green to make the most of it. Time will tell if he rewards the Ravens faith in him.

Still, some of you will still sit there and say that the Ravens “zero tolerance” policy as it relates to sexual allegations is just an empty promise. But should such a policy by applied to cases when there’s no evidence of sexual allegations? Should the zero-tolerance policy be enforced just because the court of public opinion claims that Green is a criminal? When did we become a society willing to convict before due process?

At the end of the day, the Ravens did the right thing. They gave a man a 2nd chance, a chance to redeem himself. A chance to reclaim his reputation. A chance to take the cancel culture head on and put them on mute.
