Gage Workman DFA’d; strikes out with both Chicago teams
After an amazing spring training, Gage Workman has fallen upon hard times after tenures with both Chicago teams. The Cubs initially selected him in the Rule-5 draft, traded him to the White Sox back on April 26, he was placed on the injured list on May 1 with a hip flexor strain, and he now has been designated for assignment.
Gage Workman has struck out with both the Chicago Cubs and White Sox
Prior to the Cubs series in Toyko against the Dodgers, Workman was explosive at the plate in spring training hitting for a .424 batting average and a 1.201 on base plus slugging percentage. Unfortunately he did not carry that success over to the regular season as he went just 3-14 with six strikeouts during his time with the Cubs that also featured a few defensive lapses.
With the White Sox,things were not much better. While he only struck out one time with the Sox, he did only receive two plate appearances and also committed an error at third base. Upon being activated from his hip injury, the White Sox elected to designate Workman for assignment rather than keep him on their active roster. He now will be available via waivers, and if he goes unclaimed he will be offered back to the Detroit Tigers.
“I want to beat the Cubs”
After moving across town, Workman went viral for a quote where after arriving he said, “I’m with the White Sox and I’m excited to be here and now I want to beat the Cubs.”
It’s unclear where the next chapter of Workman’s baseball journey will take him, but with multiple organizations now having moved on his path back to the big leagues, and potentially getting a shot at the Cub, may be more challenging than ever.
