Worry emerges on Chicago Bulls rising star Josh Giddey

Chicago Bulls guard Josh Giddey (3) gestures after making a three point basket against the Miami Heat during the second half at United Center.

The Chicago Bulls took a one-game lead on the Miami Heat for ninth place in the Eastern Conference on Wednesday night thanks to the efforts of Josh Giddey. The Bulls shooting guard recorded his seventh triple-double of the season in Chicago’s 119-111 win over Miami in front of 20,509 fans at the United Center.

Giddey’s 28 points, 16 rebounds, and 11 assists might be key in giving the Bulls a home game for the Play-In Tournament next week.

Giddey has been playing great basketball for most of March and April, recently recording a triple-double in Chicago’s five-point win over the (eliminated from playoff contention) Portland Trail Blazers on Friday.

A worry emerges on Josh Giddey

Per K.C. Johnson of CHSN, there’s a worry that Giddey’s strong performance since the trade deadline has set Chicago up for an “expensive” contract negotiation.

Can’t emphasize this enough: The difference between the Josh Giddey who started the season and the Josh Giddey the Bulls see consistently now is enormous,” Johnson wrote. “And may be expensive.”

Giddey has been consistently good lately, but Chicago has been playing consistently bad teams during his hot streak.

Should the Chicago Bulls pay Josh Giddey $30 million per year?

Since March 24, Giddey has played well against postseason teams like the Los Angeles Lakers and Nikola Jokic-less Denver Nuggets. He struggled against a shorthanded but Play-In tournament-bound Dallas Mavericks team (scored eight points).

The Oklahoma City Thunder trip was a disaster, as Giddey and the Bulls were blown out 145-117 by a legitimate contender to win an NBA Finals.

On Tuesday night, the Bulls chose to rest Giddey, Coby White, and Nikola Vucevic against the Cleveland Cavaliers, the No. 1 team in the Eastern Conference. Instead of seeing how Giddey and White can consistently compete when they play the likes of the Cavs, the organization chose to save their efforts so they had a better chance of defeating a mediocre Heat team.

Chicago’s front office doesn’t trust Giddey and White to beat the Cavs. Hopefully, they don’t get suckered into paying Giddey $30 million per year based on his consistent performances against irrelevant competition.
