Projection: Extremely talented but criminally misused receiver that will be under-drafted and will be a steal for some team on Draft day. He is a starting flanker or slot receiver now and could develop into an X with more time spent honing his skills releasing from press coverage. Can be the feature receiver in an offense. He was not often asked to run NFL-type routes, was used as a decoy, and generally miscast as a gadget player in an offense that could have been built around him as the primary receiver. When he does get to play like an NFL receiver, you can see him do many things at a high level, including in his release game, his separation through his routes, at the catch-point and after the catch. He can be a special playmaker at the next level. Draft Projection: Late Round 1 (Grinding the Mocks)
Ravens Fit: If it was my board, Burden being available for the Ravens, as he appears projected to be in the lead-up to the Draft, would present a major dilemma for a team that doesn’t need receivers and presents itself as an organisation that prioritizes talent over need when selecting in the 1st Round. It would be a challenge to make Burden fit into an offense with the weapons they have under contract next year. He would be a luxury pick and he’s not yet ready to play the X role, which is the only possible need argument you can make at the receiver position and even that is a shaky one. However, drafting at the bottom of the 1st round, you don’t often get a chance at a talent like Burden and it would behove the Ravens to seriously consider drafting him to give Lamar Jackson another long-term weapon. They would need to get comfortable with a succession planning approach at receiver that lets Rashod Bateman walk in two years and possibly even Zay Flowers walking in three years, knowing you have Burden for another two after that. I don’t think the pick fits with the team-building approach they appear to be taking, looking to maximize the next two-three year Superbowl window for this team but it would be very tempting purely based on talent.
Overall Fit 4/5
Evaluation
Releasing from the Line
He has outstanding athletic ability, specifically his speed and explosion which he utilizes in the release portion of the route. When executing space releases, he closes the space to the defender well with a variety of techniques, then uses the explosion to make single and double moves off the line work, and can accelerate off the line. He is physical and competitive with good play strength, so when he is jammed, he is able to release into his route stem efficiently. He could stand to add more of a plan against press with a jam, and add more polish to his work with his hands, but this will likely come with more reps as he wasn’t jammed too often in college. Against off or bail coverage, he doesn’t have as much play speed and could close cushion more quickly to attack leverage. When he gets to the break point on shorter routes that call for a speed cut, there is far too much rise and he doesn’t make the transition quickly. On dig routes or deep outs, he has a good brake step but his drive step and subsequent line step allow the defender back into the rep. His technique on these type of short and intermediate routes that call for a 90 degree cut consistently lets him down and means he is unable to take advantage of his athletic ability to win at the top of his routes in these situations.
On more hard angle breaks for hitches and deep comebacks, he can snap off his acceleration effectively and use his explosive ability to stop quickly, giving him a chance to create separation but he consistently allows DBs with better ball skills a chance to win at the catch-point as he doesn’t work back to the Quarterback and doesn’t understand where hits will be coming from when working against zone coverage. He could generally do a better job in underneath and intermediate areas identifying coverage quicker and finding soft spots. He could also be a better salesman and often tips his hand to the DB when you inspect his stem more closely. On vertical routes, both go routes and those that call for a vertical cut, he can be dangerous against even the best competition. He has an effective bam step and can get the defender to turn the wrong way or remain flat-footed as he breaks to the corner or the post, before deploying his acceleration and speed to win emphatically.
Getting Open
He has really good hands and catches the ball outside his frame effectively. He attacks all types of target well and positions his hands correctly to give him the best chance at securing the catch. He has good body positioning to adjust to the football but there is the small deficiency already mentioned, ensuring he protects the football against better DBs. He does not win consistently with YAC with change of direction or contact balance, though he can run away from defenders.
Catching the Ball
While he gets good separation regularly, he doesn’t need it to turn targets into catches. His hands are outstanding. He consistently selects the right technique for different types of ball thrown his way. He is an excellent ball tracker and it helps him to make some circus catches off this. He does the routine just as well as he does the extraordinary. You will see him routinely make catches on out routes adjusting in all kinds of ways to catch the ball around his body, but you can also see him high-point underthrown balls downfield, contorting his body mid-air to get in position to make the catch. He would have been able to do this more frequently if paired with better QB play. He is very good at knowing where he is on the sideline and adjusting his body to make the catch.
Yards After the Catch
He is explosive after the catch and can win with both athleticism and some play strength. He has explosive changes of direction that help him to win yards regularly and he can run through arm tackles at a regular clip. He did not always have the opportunity to create YAC at Mizzou as he put away some high degree of difficulty catches where he wasn’t able to bring it down and then take on extra yards.
DRAFTED RAVEN COMP
Mark Clayton – this does not signal that I think Burden is a bust, far from it, he’s a better all-around receiver who’s bigger and has better play strength than Clayton coming out. But there are some similarities to their games in college and Burden is far closer to what the Ravens probably thought they were getting when they drafted Clayton.
