Maybe Devin Williams Ain't Too Good
Let’s not sugarcoat it — Devin Williams is struggling. And in New York, where expectations are sky-high and patience is razor-thin, that’s a problem. A big one. The Yankees’ bullpen has been springing leaks, and Williams is at the center of the storm.
Saturday’s meltdown against the Rays put his issues under the spotlight. Tasked with holding a four-run cushion in the ninth inning, Williams couldn’t get the job done. The Rays clawed back, and by the time Jonathan Aranda walked it off an inning later, Yankees fans were left staring at another blown game and asking the obvious question: Can this guy handle New York?
So far, the answer leans toward no.
Williams’ first month wearing pinstripes has been anything but smooth. Sure, he came in with a stellar track record — a 1.93 ERA, 15 saves, and a strong 6-4 record with the Brewers last season — but none of that matters now. Not in this town. Right now, he’s sitting on an ugly 9.00 ERA with the Yankees, and every outing feels like a high-wire act with no net.
Meanwhile, fans and analysts alike are starting to stir. Can the current bullpen setup really hold up in high-pressure games? Is it time to consider adding reinforcements via trade? Because if the Yankees can’t trust their late-inning arms, especially in tight games against playoff-caliber teams, their October dreams might just fizzle before they begin.
More than anything, this is about trust. The Yankees need someone to step up in those final frames. Devin Williams was supposed to be that guy. Right now? He’s not. Social media lit up after the Rays game. For Williams this feels like a pattern — and the Yankees don’t have time for patterns like this.
The pressure is on. Not just for Williams to rediscover his dominant form, but for the Yankees to make hard decisions about the bullpen, and hard decisions are something that Aaron Boone can never make effectively. If the Yankees wants to contend, they can’t keep letting games slip through their fingers in the ninth.
So yeah — Luke Weaver is my closer.
And until Devin Williams shows otherwise, maybe he should be yours too.
