Chicago Cubs pull off trade with Chicago White Sox over promising rookie

MLB: Spring Training Atlanta Braves at Chicago Cubs

The Chicago Cubs‘ trash is the Chicago White Sox‘s treasure. The Cubs and White Sox are on polar opposite sides of the coin in April.

At 6-20, the White Sox are 9.5 games behind the Detroit Tigers for first place in the AL Central. The Cubs are 3.5 games ahead of the Cincinnati Reds for first place in the NL Central with a 17-10 record.

The Cubs’ weakness in their lineup this year has been at third base. The team sent rookie infielder Matt Shaw down to Iowa this month after struggling at the plate.

The Cubs DFA’d Rule 5 pick Gage Workman this week after he made two errors against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday night.

Per Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times, the Cubs traded Workman to the White Sox on Saturday for cash considerations.

“Cubs announce they have traded INF Gage Workman to the White Sox for cash considerations,” Lee posted on X.

While Workman’s slow development would have been an impediment for a Cubs team that is a favorite to make a run to the World Series, he can be an asset to a White Sox team that is trying to develop a youthful roster this season.

Workman needs to work on his fielding. He’s coming along on offense, batting .214/.267/.286 this season. He has three hits on 14 at-bats with two RBI. He made his MLB debut with the Cubs on March 29.

The Detroit Tigers selected Workman with the No. 102 pick in the 2020 draft. The Cubs selected the switch-hitter and right-handed thrower from the Tigers in the Rule 5 draft on Dec. 11, 2024.
