OTL: NFLPA Report Cards Give Harbs Haters Ammo

Harbaugh in the rain at training camp OTL

If the Baltimore Ravens were an elementary student, their NFLPA report card would be going up on the fridge. Or maybe not, depends on how strict the parents are. Mine probably wouldn’t have. Let’s see what’s on here.

Hmm, head coach at a B, owner’s an A, food’s a B, travel’s an A-, weight room a B+, treatment of family a C+?? We’ll circle back to that one later. First thing’s first. John Harbaugh’s a “B” grade head coach, per his players. Personally, I agree that’s probably about where we’re at at this point in time. Here’s the issue with these rankings. People see where Harbaugh falls when ranked among his peers, and think that means he’s a bottom five head coach.

Now, I’m not in the mood to cape for Harbaugh at the moment, but I don’t think that his players believe that there are 27 head coaches better than him, nor do I think any reasonable Ravens fan believes that. If you do, you’re wrong. Mike McCarthy – the currently unemployed Mike McCarthy – got an A. Would you rather have him? I wouldn’t call these rankings a good measuring stick for comparing the quality of one head coach to another.

Nothing else really jumps out to me here. It’s all about what I would expect, except for the last one: treatment of family. That C+ sticks out, and it’s weird. It’s the only grade the Ravens have below a B-. Maybe work on that?

I never fret about these rankings because they don’t really mean anything when it comes to what happens on Sundays. The Kansas City Chiefs ranked 26th. Funny how that works. Their head coach, however, got an A+. Ours didn’t. The Super Bowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles ranked 22nd. Again, funny how that works. Their head coach, Nick Sirianni, got an A-, which puts him as the 18th best head coach in the league. Would you rather have Mike McCarthy, or Nick Sirianni?

It’s all about perception. At the end of the day, these rankings aren’t for the fans, they’re for the teams to identify areas in which to improve. Remember that.
