Chicago Bears candidate complains about ‘unfortunate’ interview process

The Chicago Bears were selective about who they brought to Halas Hall for the first round of interviews. Ron Rivera and Mike McCarthy met with the Bears in person.
Most of the interviews have been virtual. Many of the candidates are coordinators on teams in the playoffs who must meet virtually in the first round, like Detroit Lions OC Ben Johnson.
On Friday, the Bears are set to meet with another candidate getting ready for the divisional round. Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken is preparing to get Lamar Jackson & Co. ready to travel to play the Buffalo Bills at Highmark Stadium on Sunday.
Two days before arguably the best division-round game of the weekend, the 58-year-old will meet with the Bears.
Todd Monken calls NFL’s interview process ‘unfortunate’
Per Jamison Hensley of ESPN, on Thursday, Monken called the NFL’s interview system “unfortunate,” stressing that he was preparing for the Bills over worrying about trying to land a head coaching job.
“The way the system is set up is unfortunate, but it is what it is,” Monken said “But I’m excited to play the Bills — that’s where my mind’s at…So, all of my focus last week was on the Steelers, and all of my focus this week is on the Bills,” Monken said. “I love the job I have — I really do, and I have a great job here.”
No way to change it?
Despite complaining about the overlap, Monken isn’t sure how to change the system so assistant coaches aren’t distracted while trying to get their team ready for a postseason game.
“I don’t think there’s any easy way, or they’d already be doing it,” Monken said. “It is what it is. It’s like trying to figure out things. … They’ve been trying to figure it out. There’s no easy way. There’s no easy solution, so it is what it is.”
The Chicago Bears can interview the losing OC in person soon.
The Bills will play the Ravens on Sunday at 5:30 p.m. CT. Following the game, Monken or Buffalo’s OC Joe Brady won’t have to worry about an overlapping schedule before their second round of interviews. They will be able to meet with clubs in person.
It will be a disappointing consolation prize.
