Danny Dimes About to Drop in B’more?

No one would deny that the New York Giants royally screwed over Daniel Jones. I doubt that many in Giants headquarters would recuse themselves from massive blame. Clearly, he was over-drafted – taken 6th overall in 2019 NFL Draft. No one projected Jones to go that high except the G-Men. And with such a lofty draft status come expectations.

But the Giants did little to surround Jones with talent, particularly across the offensive line. He was pummeled regularly. Now that’s not to say that Jones is free from blame, but organizationally, the Giants soiled the bed completely with their handling of the former Duke Blue Devil.

So, things got so bad that the Giants were willing to part ways with “Danny Dimes”. In doing so, the collateral damage is huge — $70M in dead cap money.

Let’s face it, Jones is the franchise’s scapegoat – the poster child to defray blame when the entire Big Blue operation needs to look in the mirror and admit the real culprit – widespread incompetence. Big Blew It will require a massive cleanup, and it will take more than one dumpster. It might take a fleet.

Now, pundits are speculating where Jones will land, and many have pegged Baltimore as a likely destination for Jones. I guess this has something to do with Jones’ alleged interest in playing for a playoff contender for the balance of 2024. But what good will that do? How might that elevate Jones’ market value in 2025?

What would it do for the Ravens? Are his clipboard handling skills vastly superior to those of Josh Johnson. And speaking of Johnson, he’s a well-respected veteran. Kicking him to the curb after he’s been with the club through the grind of training camp and throughout the 2024 season could result in some locker room descension. Why risk it?

Today I received an email from Bookies.com, an online sports wagering outfit. They have the Ravens listed as clear favorites for Jones’ services at +400 and a 20% chance of picking purple and black as his newest favorite colors. Next up are the Dolphins at +500 and a 16.7% chance.

Wouldn’t it make more sense for Jones to go somewhere like Carolina where he could surely land as a backup with the possibility of becoming a starter quickly? After all, even the nomadic Andy Dalton usurped starter status from Bryce Young for a hot minute in Carolina. And let’s not forget that Jones is a Charlotte, NC native. Although organizationally, the Panthers might be the one team worse than the Giants and maybe two notches up from the Browns.

Some might tell you that it would make sense for the Ravens to sign Jones and when he hits the open market in March of 2025, they’ll pick up a 2026 comp pick for the former Giant. Isn’t such a move right in the wheelhouse of the sly Eric DeCosta?

Does anyone seriously think that’s a unique thought? That other GMs aren’t aware of the comp pick value?

And then of course there’s Daniel Jones himself. What might he want?

If carrying a clipboard and working the scout teams is what he prefers in his future as a career backup, then sure, bring him to Baltimore. But that’s highly doubtful for a man who probably wants to show the world what he can do when not donning the colors of the Giants.

There’s really no future for Jones in Baltimore and there’s clearly no reason for the Ravens to be the favorite to be his next employer.

Danny will have to earn his next dime elsewhere.
