Sion Power Installs Large-Format Battery Cell Production
On March 31, 2025, Sion Power announced a significant advancement in the commercialization of its Licerion® lithium-metal battery technology with the installation of a new large-format battery cell production line. Developed in collaboration with the Mühlbauer Group, this state-of-the-art, fully automated line is capable of producing 75 MWh annually of 56 amp-hour lithium-metal cells. These large-format cells are crucial for demonstrating the scalability and applicability of Sion Power’s proprietary technology for electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers.
Licerion® technology addresses key challenges in mass EV adoption by offering twice the energy density of traditional lithium-ion batteries, with over 400 Wh/kg. This advancement is expected to reduce the cost of a 200 kWh battery pack by 35% through a 15% decrease in cell material costs and a 20% reduction in cell count. Additionally, Licerion® enables charge times comparable to the average 8-minute refuel time at gas stations.
The new production line enhances Sion Power’s capacity to produce large-format cells exceeding 50 amp-hours, facilitating technology development, joint development efforts with strategic partners, and customer validation. This development marks a critical milestone in advancing Licerion® technology to meet automotive standards and positions Sion Power for volume production readiness by 2028.
To further drive commercialization efforts, Sion Power has expanded its leadership team with the appointments of Liz Rojewski as Chief Operating Officer (COO) and Mitch Hourtienne as Chief Commercial Officer (CCO). These additions aim to accelerate the company’s growth and strengthen its position in the next-generation battery market.
