Ptolemaia and the IVPP V12385 specimen of Hapalodectes: together at last

Both are represented by small, crested and incomplete skull material
(Fig 1). Both nest among the pre-placental1 marsupials (for now), just prior to the larger hyaenodontids, oxyaenids and mesonychids in their own clade.

Not big news. Not famous.
Just glad to make the match of these two rather small, relatively unstudied taxa – except that the IVPP V12385 specimen attributed to Hapalodectes was a late survivor of an Early Cretaceous radiation basal to Vulpavus and Nasua (Fig 2) in the large reptile tree (LRT, 2338 taxa), which is basal to a long list of placental1 taxa including elephants and sloths, carnivores, primates (Fig 2) and artiodactyls.

?Hapalodectes ?hetangensis
(Ting et al. 2004; 7 cm skull length; Early Eocene 50 mya; IVPP V 12385) was originally considered a tiny mesonychid. The premaxilla is largely missing. Related taxa have a transverse premaxilla.
