Dissacus and Callistoe: together at last

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Again, somewhat obvious in hindsight.
And never far apart. Callistoe (Fig 1) now nests with Dissacus (Fig 1) in the large reptile tree (LRT, 2336 taxa). I just had to get around to reviewing these two similar creodont taxa.

Figure 1. Callistoe nests wtih Dissacus now in the LRT, shown here to scale.

Dissacus remains close to Sarcophilus,
the Tasmanian Devil. And these are all dasyurids. So that makes hyaenodontids, mesonychids, and the Andrewsarchus clade all derived from quolls and devils.

…which only makes sense.

Dissacus zanabazari
(Cope 1881; Geisler and McKenna 2007; Early Palaeocene to Early Eocene) was traditionally considered a mesonychid. Here it remains close to mesonychids.

Callistoe vincei
Babot et al. 2002; Argot and Babot 2011; Early Eocene, 35mya; PVL 4187) was originally considered a probohyaenid. Here it nests with Dissacus, close to Hyaenodon, sharing a descending jugal among other traits. Both are considered Sparassodonta (Ameghino 1894), but that appears to be a junior synonym of Creodonta (Cope 1875).
