Convergent no more: Talpa moves to the placental2 clade
Talpa, the European mole
moves over to the placental2 clade in the large reptile tree (LRT, 2336 taxa) close to Uropsilus, the shrew mole (Fig 1).

These remain derived from marsupial moles,
like extant Notoryctes and Jurassic Docofossor (Fig 2). The basal taxon in this clade, Monodelphis kunsi (Figs 1, 2), is also extant.

Earlier data
based on three views of Talpa as a drawing (Fig 3), were the problem overcome today. Here (Fig 1) a photograph provides the data. Related taxa provided the key insight.

As in many marsupials,
the putative canine in Talpa is actually the first premolar. Related taxa, like Uropsilus (Fig 1), and convergent taxa also reduce and lose the canine, which often takes the form of an incisor.
These are the insights that come slowly, but gratefully, and only by adding taxa.
