Phosphatherium: now a big Paleocene hyrax/liptotern

Traditionally
elephants, hyraxes and manatees are relatives in textbook mammal family trees. See wiki/Tethytheria.

By contrast
a few weeks ago elephants and manatees went their separate ways taking closely related taxa with them. These phylogenetic moves were first made in the large reptile tree (LRT, 2328 taxa). Phosphatherium (Fig 1) went with manatees then. Today it returns to hyraxes and liptoterns = long-legged hyraxes.

Phosphatherium escuillei
(Gheerbrant, Sudre and Cappetta 1996; Late Paleocene; 10cm skull length) nests with the hyrax, Procavia. The skull data is a bit scrappy. One skull is largely plaster.
