When my stepmother Cindy set foot in Predjama Castle, she felt a thickness in the air. Some parts of the castle, you feel an electric charge that seems to go through your body. Cindy heard many stories about this castle and from talking with locals and tourists, there is a lot of paranormal activity happening at this castle. The former lord of this castle Erasmus aka the Slovenian Robin Hood haunts this castle to this very day. Erasmus killed a Marshall at the Viennese Court and fled to the castle to escape punishment. Erasmus survived, thanks to a secret tunnel. The secret tunnel was a supply route, bringing food and other necessities that was needed to survive. Erasmus eventually met his fate when he was betrayed and killed by his own men. His ghost is said to walk the maze of cold, dark passageways, seeking revenge. One tourist saw Erasmus coming out of a wall holding a knife. His eyes were piercing. The tourist was so scared that he fell. The ghost of Erasmus walked past the fallen tourist and seemed to be looking for something.

Before the castle was built, there were people inhabiting the area where the castle now sits. The castle is built within the walls of a cave. That cave housed people from the Paleolithic era. It’s the second largest cave in Slovenia. There is another cave which is 5 miles away from Predjama Castle called the Postojna Cave. Locals believe that Postojna Cave connects to Predjama Castle. The caves are very haunted. Shadow people have been seen in the caves. Disembodied growling is heard. People who venture into the cave get bruised and scratched by unseen forces. Predjama Castle was once known as Castle Luegg. Writings indicate that the castle was called Castle Luegg as far back as 1274. The castle was most likely built in the 12th Century. So, you can see this castle has a lot of history. Slovenia was once part of the German empire. Luegg is the name of the German family who once owned the castle. In the 15th century Erasmus (Erazem) Luegg ruled the castle.

Luka Novak, a local claims that he is a psychic and was able to visualize seeing the castle damaged and soldiers of the Habsburgs taking possession of the castle, an event that actually happened. The Habsburgs controlled the castle for 1 year. History tells us that a family called the Oberburg(s) rebuilt the castle in 1510. Luka when visiting the castle also was able to utilize his psychic powers to go back in time and watch people running out of the castle during a massive earthquake that occurred in 1511. Luka says there is strong residual energy at this castle and traumatic events replay itself over and over again. Marko Kovacic, another local has seen a ghostly hunter walking the grounds of the castle. Marko spotted the ghostly hunter, and the ghostly hunter looked at Marko. The ghostly hunter placed his hand over his mouth and then started pointing. The hunter then positioned his rifle and disappeared.

You are probably wondering who Erasmus was. A bit of history on this Slovenian Robin Hood. Erasmus Luegg was a very clever knight and robber baron. He was compared to Robin Hood, stealing from the rich and giving to the poor. He was the son of the Emperor Governor of Trieste, Nikolaj Luegg. He became a target and wanted man when he killed the kinsman known as Marshal Pappenheim of Frederick III, the Holy Roman Emperor. Angering both the Roman Emperor and the House of Habsburg he fled to his castle, thinking he would be safe. The Habsburgs were convinced he wouldn’t last long. They had even poisoned the water wells. Erasmus remained safe for over a year. Marija Vidmar a local saw the ghost of Erasmus crouching down in a corner, in the shadows, as if he was hiding. When Marija approached him, he disappeared.

Erasmus was very clever and knew all the tricks of the trade. Erasmus also knew the castle and cave system like the back of his hand. Thanks to a large vertical, natural shaft behind the castle, leading out to the open on the other side of the mountain. He was able to sneak in and out without being seen, even setting out on his plundering expeditions. Servants were able to get fresh food into the castle. The rainwater conservation system provided the castle residents with fresh water. Erasmus liked to tease his attackers by throwing fresh local products at his attackers like cherries. He loved to aggravate his attackers. Unfortunately, Erasmus was betrayed by one of his servants. He raised a flag when Erasmus was using his toilet in one of the outer (less protected) buildings and a cannon ended his life. The place where Erasmus is buried is marked with a tree. Tian Horvat a local tourist has heard the residual effects of that sudden death of Erasmus. During a visit to the castle, Tian heard the sound of a cannon and heard a man’s blood curdling scream. When Tian asked other people if they heard the cannon and the scream, no one heard it, except for Tian.

Natasa Mlakar entered an area of the castle where there were holes in the ceiling of the entrance tower. Natasa saw boiling oil coming out of the holes and falling on 3 people. The 3 people were in agonizing pain as the hot boiling oil poured all over their bodies. This image of the boiling oil and 3 people suffering from the hot oil lasted for a couple of minutes and then it was gone. Natasa did some research and discovered that this was an actual event that happened in the castle. The boiling oil was a way to keep out intruders. Natasa also discovered that there was a space in between the walls of the dungeon made to brick people up inside the wall. Bones were found inside the thick wall. If you were an enemy and captured, you might wind up being bricked up inside a wall while alive. Sometimes tourists have heard screaming coming out of these walls.

This castle has a small courtroom which overlooked the small torture chamber. In the courtroom there is also a door leading to a 207-foot-deep vertical cave drop. Victims were usually tortured and executed at this spot and thrown into the cave drop. At this cave drop, screams are also heard. The caves underneath the castle are mineral caves with quartz and iron. Quartz is known to collect and store energy. The quartz most likely has collected all of the gruesome deaths that happened at this castle, making this castle the MOST HAUNTED castle in Slovenia!
