In 1975, I went with my Sergeant Major to Bologna, Italy, where his wife lived and had a restaurant. For 29 cents (don’t ask me how much that is in Italian lira), I could get a bowl of spaghetti, a glass of wine and all of the bread that I can eat. At the hotel I was staying at in Bologna, Italy they had a restaurant on the first floor. I discovered that this restaurant had 29 variety of spaghetti(s). I tried to eat every type of spaghetti, but it was impossible, because I was only going to be in Bologna for 6 days. I saw so many things on my traveling adventure with the Sergeant Major. As we headed to Bologna, we made a stop at the base of the majestic, mysterious Matterhorn. The Matterhorn is located in the canton of Valais, in southwest Switzerland, above the village of Zermatt. It straddles the border between Switzerland and Italy. I marveled at this magnificent mountain. The first thought in my mind was…..”is this mountain is haunted?” I learned that this mountain is very haunted. According to local legends and historical accounts, the Matterhorn in Switzerland is considered to be haunted, with many villagers believing it is inhabited by evil spirits or ghosts due to its treacherous nature and the numerous climbing fatalities it has claimed over the years; particularly the tragic first ascent where several climbers died during the descent, further fueling the belief of a “cursed” mountain. People in Zermatt, the town near the Matterhorn, historically believed the mountain was guarded by supernatural beings who would hurl rocks at climbers who attempted to reach the summit. The Matterhorn has a notorious history of climbing accidents, with many climbers losing their lives attempting to reach the peak, contributing to the perception of a haunted mountain.

On a per climber basis, the mountain is quite safe. But the Matterhorn is one of the world’s deadliest peaks in terms of total fatalities, with more than 500 climbers perishing on the mountain since 1865—an average of 12 deaths per year. The causes of death are:

1. a combination of steep and exposed climbing sections,
2. sudden storms,
3. rockfall,
4. its popularity as overeager tourists without experience often try to climb it without a local guide,
5. many deaths occur on the descent, which is a hair-raising, three-and-a-half-hour highwire act along a sharp ridgeline and down through loose rock.

The Matterhorn has had more deaths than any other mountain in the Alps. Some climbers have made claim of seeing ghostly climbers. A few climbers have even mentioned that when they were in a tight spot, a ghostly climber would walk them through the climb, saving their lives. These surviving climbers believe that the mountain is cursed, but the mountain has ghostly climbers that look out for the living climbers. These helpful ghostly climbers are considered as angels by some villagers. One climber by the name of Luca Schindelholz, explained that when he was in a rough spot, a ghostly climber assisted him on the foothold and whispered in his ear, that everything will be okay. The climber followed the instructions of the ghostly climber and descended safely to the base of the mountain. While this Matterhorn is haunted, the Matterhorn in Disneyland is also haunted.

MATTERHORN IN DISNEYLAND
In 1984, Dolly Regena Young, a 48-year-old woman from California, died after falling out of her bobsled and being hit by another bobsled. The area where she was hit is now called “Dolly’s Dip”. Some Disneyland employees claim to have seen Dolly’s ghost, felt a “supernatural presence”, or heard whispers while working on the ride. Some say that the feeling of being watched is worst in the big cavern in the middle of the ride and at Dolly’s Dip. Others say that the work lights in the tunnel near Dolly’s Dip always seem to be burned out. Special Note: I have been on the Matterhorn in Disneyland 3 times and never felt anything I would consider as supernatural.
