Today marks a significant milestone. As I hit “submit” on my PhD dissertation at RMIT School of Architecture and Urban Design, I close a deeply reflective five-year chapter rooted in my journey with EDIBLE GARDEN CITY—one that has allowed me to critically examine our practice, and to honestly confront the mistakes and missteps we’ve made in our pursuit of urban farming in Singapore.
As my citation states, this research developed a practice-based framework and an Urban Food Sovereignty Inquiry to assess the nutritional, social, and environmental impacts of urban agriculture. The outcomes aim to advance sustainable urban development by positioning community-led food systems as essential to social wellbeing, equity, and urban resilience.
At the same time, I’m stepping back into the role of Chief Urban Farmer at EDIBLE GARDEN CITY with renewed clarity and purpose. This journey into urban food sovereignty has deepened my understanding of the power dynamics shaping our food systems and reaffirmed the transformative potential of multifunctional urban farms in building a more just, equitable, and nourishing future.
