Quality Still Winning
Something is happening right now that we haven’t seen in a long time, even though it’s only been for a “short minute.” The iShares Russell 2000 ETF (IWM), up 3.63%, is the lead horse compared to the S&P 500 (3.26%) and NASDAQ (2.40%). What remains the same is the lagging return of the iShares Micro-Cap ETF (IWC), up 1.30%.
Regardless, it’s nice to see all the averages in positive territory.
The really bright spot right now is that quality continues to shine, with the MS Microcap Quality Index (MSMqi) up a whopping 12% in January, so far.
We’ll see if this continues throughout the year, as smart investors continue to flock to smaller cap quality names not included in the major indexes, a prophecy we’ve been annoyingly reminding you of since 2022.
By the way, you may recall that the MSMqi rose 54.94% in 2024.
GeoInvesting Investor Network Pitches Continue To Shine
Speaking of beating the market, we have to, once again, tip our hats to quantitative investor Ryan Telford.
One of my goals at GeoInvesting, as well as at my new Substack, is to continue to highlight some of the best investors in the microcap space to help all of us generate alpha. Hand-picking these investors isn’t easy, but I think it’s what you expect us to do for you.
Ryan Telford participated as a special guest at MS Microcaps’ November 13, 2024 Starting FIve Virtual Conference #2, when he pitched three stocks— Expensify, Inc. (NASDAQ:EXFY), Oppfi Inc. (NYSE:OPFI), Zoomd Technologies Ltd. (OOTC:ZMDTF) (ZOMD.V)—based on his quantitative analysis.
As it turns out, all three stocks are faring quite well since the November 13, 2024 session, with an average return of 54.83%:

- ZOMD.V, +60.71 %
- OPFI, +78.78 %
This compares to an average of 32.6% on December 16, 2024.
