“I am sure many Canadians are wondering about who’s side NATO will take in a US invasion?” Denis asked this morning. “The world watched (as did NATO) when Trump’s buddy invaded Ukraine. Now Canada is the target. Is there any hope of some kind of monetary or military backing from our NATO allies? Or are we just going to be the next Ukraine?”

Yikes. American troops marching up Robson, securing the Rogers Centre and storming the Citadel? Isn’t this talk about annexing our country and becoming a US state just so off the wall? Has Denis been into the weed gummy jar again?

But wait.

Trudeau told business leaders Friday that the 51st state was “a real thing.” And yesterday the American president said Canada, “is not a viable country.” Tariff Man also resurfaced, and today we’re to hear about 25% duties on our steel and aluminum shipped south. This could carve about $200 billion off our GDP, and hit southern Ontario hard.

Not a viable country?

A favourite refrain of oppo leader Pierre Poilievre is that Canada “is broken.” A recent Ipsos poll found that he’d hit the mark. About 70% of those surveyed agreed. The country is “riddled with crime and chaos,” PP says. “The border and immigration are out of control.” “Trudeau is a wacko.” His ministers are “crazy, incompetent, discredited, disastrous.” Now the guns turn on Mark Carney, decried as a WEF goon, lackey and extreme enviro globalist.

Is it any wonder the US president says Canada’s a write-off when our own leaders spin that story to citizens?

So, tariffs are back on. The annexation thing’s still alive. Trump says he will use “economic coercion” to break our patriotism. Trudeau says take him seriously. Poilievre echoes Trump’s “Fight, fight, fight” mantra with the statement he made in Surrey last week: “We will be guided by a warrior culture and not a woke culture.” These are the days, it seems, when national pride takes a back seat to ideology.

And yet a recent Nik Nanos poll found that only 26% of people think a PP government could stand up to Donald Trump. A Carney-led administration had 40% backing.

Yesterday a commenter asked why this pathetic blog has been hip-wader-deep in political muck lately instead of telling you how to make money, buy real estate and escape taxes. Sadly the answer is simple. The orange guy is now the single biggest determinant of Canada’s immediate economy and monetary policy. That, in turn, dictates everything from your mortgage rate to retirement income.

Today’s tariffs are undeserved, capricious and damaging. They have nothing to do with our border, which is absolutely fine. The migrants-and-fentanyl stuff was always a distraction. Trump’s goals are economic, not social. He is out to Hoover and hurt Canada (and Mexico, and soon the Euro guys) in order to enrich America.

Here are today’s facts.

• Canada is fine. Heaven? No. But among the best places on the planet to live.
• The country is not broken. Millions wish they could come here.
• Current federal leaders are imperfect. They’re not wackos.
• Canada is not in chaos, nor is it crime-riddled.
• Trump is not our friend. Not an icon. No saviour.
• The more we run our homeland down, the more that others will follow.
• Political polarization makes us vulnerable.
• Those who say we deserve to be tariffed and mocked by the American president because we’re weak, render us weaker.
• At this moment, Canada is more viable than America, which is slipping towards autocracy. Fast.

You want a better country?

Then get out of the social media swamp and go help somebody. That would be an act of courageous resistance.
