Reps and Dems Different Species? Most Dems “Believe There Are More Than Two Sexes”

People trying to find common ground between groups sometimes may say, “We’re more alike than we’re different.” Yet this may not be true of Republicans and Democrats — especially not today. Oh, sure, we all have the same tolerances for heat and cold, require oxygen, have survival needs, and are mortal. We also all have beliefs, but this is where profound differences emerge. Just consider a striking example.

Ninety-six percent of Republicans agree with President Donald Trump’s executive order affirming that there are just two sexes.

Among Democrats, however, only 14 percent support the measure. Seventy-seven percent oppose it, leaving some observers aghast that upwards of three-quarters of Democrats believe there are more than two sexes.

Of course, it’s logical assuming the above is partially explained by Trump Derangement Syndrome. That is, some people will reflexively oppose anything the president does. (As commentator Ben Shapiro amusingly put it in 2018, “Trump’s Superpower” is that “he can make Democrats defend anything.”)

Unfortunately, though, the delusion runs deeper than that, as a Biden-era PRRI (Public Religion Research Institute) study found. “Fully 90% of Republicans say there are just two genders,” NBC News related in 2023, reporting on the research. This is contrasted with “66% of independents and 44% of Democrats who believe the same.”

Measuring Dislocation From Reality

The recent survey noted above was conducted February 13-17 by Quinnipiac University. As FrontPage Magazine reports:

The survey among 1,039 self-identified, registered voters posed questions about a range of current political issues from the economy to Gaza, including “Gender and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion” — specifically, “Do you support or oppose President Trump’s executive order recognizing only two sexes, male and female, in the United States?”

As to the latter, Quinnipiac writes:

Fifty-seven percent of voters support President Trump’s executive order recognizing only two sexes, male and female, in the United States, while 38 percent oppose it.

Republicans (96 – 4 percent) and independents (59 – 35 percent) support the order, while Democrats (77 – 14 percent) oppose the order.

(In fact, perhaps illustrating the two-sexes reality, the sexes themselves respond very differently on this question. While Quinnipiac found that 68 percent of men support Trump’s order, only 45 percent of women do.)

Biology 101

Note here that the sexual distinction is a basic division in nature, witnessed throughout the animal kingdom. Oh, asexual species do exist, but they’re exceedingly rare among animals. Moreover, this is the phenomenon whereby there’s only one sex — not well more than two.

Humans are no exception, either. While there are a multitude of sexual abnormalities (e.g., XXY or “Klinefelter syndrome”), these are not “other sexes.” They are examples of anomalies, of particular variation that doesn’t change what the sexes are in principle.

Detachment from this reality is no small matter, either. As FrontPage writes of the Quinnipiac findings:

These are unsettling figures, considering that for all of human history until recent years in the decadent West, the percentage of those who accepted this scientific reality versus those in denial would have been 100-0. The fact that today, only a little more than one half believe there are just two sexes, is testament to the success of decades of anti-family, cultural Marxist indoctrination among the population at large.

Two Different Ideological Worlds

And it’s not just the sexual division over which Democrats and Republicans show division. Just consider controversial efforts to increase diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in workplaces. Quinnipiac found that 59 percent of Republicans recognize this phenomenon as “bad.” Yet only 39 percent of Independents and a mere 16 percent of Democrats do.

What’s more, whether or not “time heals all wounds,” it’s certainly only exacerbating the ideological ones. As The Pew Charitable Trusts wrote last Friday, reporting on relevant research:

On several issues, the pattern is not just that Americans’ views have changed markedly over the past two decades. It’s that Democrats and Republicans have grown further apart in their views, eroding areas of common ground between the parties. (In this essay, as in most Center publications, “Democrats” and “Republicans” refer to people who identify with or lean toward that party.)

Consider climate change. In 2009, Democrats were already 36 percentage points more likely than Republicans to say climate change is a major threat to the U.S. (61% vs. 25%). But by 2022, that partisan gap had grown to 55 points: 78% of Democrats, but just 23% of Republicans, considered climate change a major threat.

… The topic of guns has become increasingly partisan, too. In 2003, 56% of Republicans and 29% of Democrats said it was more important to protect Americans’ right to own guns than to control gun ownership, a 27-point gap. But by 2022, that gap had swelled to 63 points (81% vs. 18%).

The Deepest Divide

Pew later adds:

Abortion is another subject where partisan divisions have grown. In 2007, 63% of Democrats said abortion should be legal in all or most cases. That share has grown to 85% today….

By comparison, there has been relatively little change in opinion among Republicans: About four-in-ten continue to say abortion should be legal in all or most cases. As a result, the partisan gap has soared from 24 points in 2007 to 44 points today.

As to why this is happening, it’s obviously a complex issue. Surely a factor, however, is that Americans were once more universally Christian. Virtually all were either avowed believers or, at least, were greatly shaped by Christian morality, as that was the default. This put them on the same page virtue-wise. This, however, is no longer the case. Rather, we’re divided spiritually, morally, and philosophically, so of course we’ll be divided politically.

Bowing down at different altars means worshiping different “gods,” whether real, material — or more explicitly demonic.
