Yesterday my portfolio-manager sidekick Ryan opined about what a long four years lie ahead of us, now that we’ve seen the chaos that just three weeks can bring. Trump is disrupting the global order, attacking allies (Denmark, Canada, Mexico), fomenting new conflict (Panama, Gaza), emboldening right-wing politicians (Germany, Britain, Spain, France), comforting dictators (Russia, Hungary, China) and threatening stable supply chains and integrated manufacturing (cars and auto parts).
He has trashed DEI programs, acted in support of the whites (not the blacks) in South Africa, approved the abrupt end of US interational aid, trashed transgenders, and taled opening about scrapping federal emergency assistance (FEMA) and the education department. Meanwhile his unelected co-president and his band of pimply Gen-Z Muskrats is romping through formerly-secure internal government networks, cacelling programs and spending and encouraging civil servants to quit before they’re fired.
It’s all astonishing. A president has never before assumed this level of authority and power, ruling through executive orders. A private citizen, let alone a billionaire oligarch with massive government contracts, has never before been given the keys to the store and assumed presidential authority. And never has the US Congress been muted, supine, flaccid, spineless and wanting as America was propelled from democracy towards autocracy.
Does it matter to us?
Damn straight. Trump said tariffs will be coming at the beginning of March, and they’ll throw Canada into recession. Beefing up the border was always a ruse and a distraction. The issue was never that, but rather a Trumpian dream about annexing our country, rich in land, water, energy, minerals and talent, sitting in a strategic hunk of geography. Trudeau’s closed-door comments a few days ago about the 51st state threat being “a real thing” should be taken seriously. He got it from the orange guy’s lips. We didn’t.
But wait.
Trump may not have spoken to you, but apparently he’s listening, and awaiting a love note from me and the unseemly rabble who come to this pathetic blog. In that spirit, I’m sharing this special Valentine’s Day message just received from the narcisist president who – because he’s my bud and put me on his oh-so-intimate mass email list – has asked for your hug, thoughts and message.
