Why It’s Important to “Wake Up” About “End-Times” Prophecy

The term “woke” has taken on a lot of meanings in our modern world. Some hear it and think of political or social movements. But in its purest form, being “woke” simply means being awake — being aware of reality and prepared to respond wisely. When it comes to end times prophecy, being woke is not optional for those who follow Christ. It is critical. Here’s why.

1. Jesus Commanded Us to Watch

Throughout the New Testament, Jesus repeatedly warned His followers to stay awake, be alert, and watch for the signs of His return.

“Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.”Matthew 24:42 (KJV)

Being “woke” in a biblical sense means paying attention, being spiritually sensitive, and living as if Christ could return at any moment. It’s not about fear-mongering — it’s about living wisely and faithfully, ready to meet Him.

2. The Signs Are Meant to Prepare Us, Not Scare Us

Prophecy isn’t given to frighten believers; it’s given to prepare and purify us.

“And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.”1 John 3:3 (KJV)

When we are aware of the approaching fulfillment of prophecy — wars, rumors of wars, the rise of deception, the shaking of nations — we are reminded to keep our lives clean, our priorities right, and our focus fixed on eternal things.

If you haven’t already noticed, God is helping us move away from the things of this world. Are your “toys” breaking down, or have other responsibilities taken us closer to God, rather than excessive engaging in the pleasures of this world? Well… NOW you know why. =)

3. Deception Will Be Rampant

Jesus warned that deception would increase dramatically before His return:

“Take heed that no man deceive you.”Matthew 24:4 (KJV)

Those who are spiritually asleep will be easy prey for false teachers, false miracles, and even a coming one-world system that will seem good but will lead to destruction. Being “woke” — grounded in Scripture and led by the Holy Spirit — is the armor that will protect us from being swept away.

This is by far one of the most important issues that stands in the way of people who do not care to study end-times. Satan has prepared the best deceptions, and we have been warned that even the very elect may be deceived.

Matthew 24:24 (KJV):

“For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.”

A few important points about this verse:

  • False Christs and false prophets will not just preach lies — they will perform great signs and wonders that appear supernatural.
  • The deception will be so strong that even the “very elect” (God’s chosen, faithful people) would be vulnerable — if it were possible.
  • The phrase “if it were possible” suggests that God will ultimately preserve His elect from falling into final deception, but it still warns us: the deception will be powerful enough to almost fool even the faithful.

4. Being Awake Keeps Our Hearts Ready

In the Parable of the Ten Virgins (Matthew 25), five were wise and five were foolish. The wise virgins stayed awake and kept their lamps filled with oil, ready for the bridegroom’s arrival. The foolish ones slept and were left out when the door was shut.

The lesson is powerful: those who are awake, prepared, and watching will be welcomed into the joy of Christ’s return. Those who are asleep will be left outside. You have been taught this concept before; do you not think that it doesn’t apply to you right now for the end-times?

5. God is Counting on Us to Warn Others

Those who are awake have a responsibility to lovingly warn others. Ezekiel 33 speaks of the watchman: if he sees danger coming but fails to sound the alarm, the blood is on his hands. If he warns the people, even if they don’t listen, he has fulfilled his duty.

Think beyond yourself for a moment. If you have children or close friends, you are going to want them informed so that they too can be prepared. Think of it this way: God, our Father, thought that this information was important enough that he wrote it in scripture to teach and prepare US. Don’t you think that you should be doing the same for your children?

We are not called to hide in fear — we are called to stand boldly, point to Jesus, and call others to wake up while there is still time.

6. “My Church Leaders Haven’t Said Anything About the End Times, So I’ll Just Wait for Them”?

It’s understandable to want to trust our church leaders. God has appointed pastors, teachers, and shepherds to help guide His people (Ephesians 4:11–12).
But when it comes to the end times — and all spiritual matters — the Bible is always our final authority, not any human leader.

Here’s why waiting passively for church leaders to sound the alarm is dangerous:

Jesus Commands Every Believer to Watch — Not Just Leaders

Jesus didn’t say, “Wait until your pastor tells you to get ready.”
He said you — personally — must watch:

“Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.” — Luke 21:36 (KJV)

Watching is your responsibility.
Every believer is called to be awake, prayerful, and alert — regardless of what their leaders say or don’t say.

Leaders Are Human — and Sometimes Silent When They Should Speak

Throughout history, there have been times when religious leaders stayed silent during major spiritual crises:

  • In Jesus’ day, the religious leaders didn’t recognize His first coming.
  • During the early church age, many leaders resisted the Gospel.
  • During the Dark Ages, church leaders led millions into deep spiritual darkness.

Silence from leadership doesn’t mean God is silent.
And sadly, some leaders today are more concerned with popularity, comfort, or avoiding fear than preparing their people for what’s coming.

“For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.”John 12:43 (KJV)

If your leaders aren’t speaking about the end times, it’s even more important that you go directly to the Word yourself.

You Have Direct Access to God’s Word

One of the greatest gifts God has given you is personal access to the Bible.

“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”2 Timothy 2:15 (KJV)

You are responsible for what you know.
If God has already spoken through Scripture — and He has — then you already have your marching orders.

Waiting for human permission when God has already spoken is dangerous ground.

The Signs Are Visible Now — Not Hidden

Jesus said:

“When ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors.”Matthew 24:33 (KJV)

The signs — global wars, plagues, economic collapse, religious deception, moral decay, Israel at the center of world events — are happening right before our eyes.
If you have spiritual eyes to see, you don’t need to wait for an official announcement from a church pulpit.

God’s Word and the Holy Spirit are already shouting: WAKE UP!

7. “It’s Just Easier to Pretend That it’s Not Happening, OR What Happens if We are NOT Really in the End-Times?”

(Saved the best for the last)

That’s a really important objection to address — and it’s one that honest, sincere people bring up.
Some people, even Christians, struggle with the idea of living as if the end times are here. They might say:

  • It’s easier to just live my life and not think about it.”
  • “What if this isn’t really the end? Maybe it’s still a long way off.”

At first glance, these thoughts seem understandable. End times prophecy is heavy. It can be unsettling. It’s tempting to push it aside and focus on daily life. But the Bible gives clear answers for these kinds of thoughts — and strong reasons why ignoring the times is spiritually dangerous.

Jesus Warned Against Spiritual Sleep

Jesus directly addressed this mindset when He said:

“But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming;
And shall begin to smite his fellowservants, and to eat and drink with the drunken;
The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of.”
— Matthew 24:48–50 (KJV)

Jesus warned that thinking, “The Lord isn’t coming yet,” leads to complacency, sin, and ultimately, judgment.
The timing doesn’t change the command: We are to stay ready at all times.

We Are Held Accountable for Watching

Jesus said:

“Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching.”Luke 12:37 (KJV)

Even if the end were farther off than we think (which it is NOT… the evidence says it’s very near!), we are still commanded to watch — to live alert, awake, and faithful.
Choosing to “pretend” is choosing to disobey Christ’s direct call to vigilance.

The Signs Are Unfolding Before Our Eyes

While no one knows the exact day or hour (Matthew 24:36), the Bible tells us to know the season.

Today, we are seeing an explosion of biblical signs — global deception, wars and rumors of wars, plagues, famines, moral collapse, hatred of Christians, and the rise of global government systems — exactly as prophesied.
To deny these signs is to close our eyes to the truth God has placed right in front of us.

We Lose Nothing By Being Ready — But Risk Everything By Being Unprepared

If somehow Christ’s return were still decades away (which is very unlikely), living ready for His coming still means:

  • Walking closely with God daily
  • Keeping our hearts pure
  • Loving others deeply
  • Staying awake spiritually
  • Spreading the Gospel with urgency

Those are not wasted efforts — they are exactly the life we are always called to live!

On the other hand, if we are wrong by ignoring the signs, we risk being caught unprepared — like the foolish virgins who had no oil when the Bridegroom arrived (Matthew 25).

Pretending it’s easier not to think about the end times is a deadly spiritual trap.
God has given us prophecy not to terrify us, but to prepare us.
The faithful are called to watch, to hope, and to live with urgency — trusting that when Jesus returns, we will be found faithful, awake, and ready.

Final Thoughts

End times prophecy is not a fringe subject for only the “super-religious.” It’s a central part of living a faithful Christian life in these last days. Being “woke” — awake, watchful, spiritually alive — is obedience to Christ’s clear command.

Now is the time to awaken, repent, draw close to Jesus, and be filled with the Holy Spirit. The night is far spent, and the day of His coming is closer than ever.

“Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.”1 Thessalonians 5:6 (KJV)
