Jesus falls for the First Time
We adore you O Christ and we Praise you
Because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world
Poem
The weight of expectation bows the most noble head
Can potential be fulfilled in the agony of impending dread
Love is all consuming possessing of everything, leaving out nothing
This burden shakes the Sacred Heart, causing the first falling.
Reflection
The start of the journey towards Golgotha is daunting. Hostile crowds baying for blood, looking for entertainment, spurred on by the spectacle of torture and death. It is savage, inhumane, cruel. A few steps in and the overwhelming atmosphere smothers Jesus and the weight of the heavy cross sends him to the floor. The scripture spoke of the Suffering Servant, the words are fulfilled in Christ.
Isaiah 53:4-5
“Yet it was our pain that he bore, our sufferings he endured. We thought of him as stricken, struck down by God and afflicted. But he was pierced for our sins, crushed for our iniquity.”
In the dirt of the earth covered in blood and sweat, the tears of compassion and love begin to wash away the sins of the people. The Body of Christ suffering for the sake of love, so that love will conquer hate, so that life will vanquish death.
