“The song has a spell in it”: The Occult Meaning of Lady Gaga’s “Abracadabra”
According to some, Lady Gaga’s Abracadabra saved her pop career. After releasing a string of projects that did not particularly excite her fan base, Abracadabra worked its magic and quickly rose to the top of the charts. To many, the song is a throwback to Gaga’s “golden age” – the early 2010 – when she released smash hits such as Bad Romance, Alejandro, and Born This Way.
There’s another element Abracadabra shares with the videos named above: It is full of occult references. In fact, the song is made to sound like an incantation, while the video is a full-on occult ritual. I’m not making this up to sound interesting; Gaga herself stated that the song has a “spell in it.”
ELLE: We love the bit where the music cuts out and the dancers are almost attacking you with the same lyrics that you’ve been singing…
GAGA: The song has a spell in it. And I imagine that our negative backtalk or when people are hard on you in your life, the world is hard on you, that’s almost like a spell. You can get seduced and you can start to believe it.
– ELLE, Lady Gaga Tells Us Everything You Want To Know About ‘Abracadabra’ After That Spectacular Grammys Reveal
If you’ve been reading this site, you know there’s nothing new about this. Most of Gaga’s career catered to the occult elite’s beliefs and agendas while constantly hinting at its darkest aspects. I’m not making this up to sound interesting; Gaga’s relationship with the elite’s favorite witch, Marina Abramovic, is extremely telling.

Gaga and Abramovic partake in mock cannibalism at a place called Devil’s Haven in the Hamptons. Can’t make this up.
Gaga and Abramovic do not merely hang out. She was a student of her Abramovic Method – a bizarre, witchcrafty “program” I cannot fully describe here.

This headline sums it up.
In short, Gaga is close with one of the elite’s favorite occultists, and she actively participates in related activities. Like any true occultist, Gaga downplays and sugarcoats the implications of her beliefs in interviews. However, as this site repeatedly highlighted, symbols rule the world. And her symbolism is the equivalent of her yelling, “I’m a witch!” right in our collective ears.
Everything about Gaga’s Abracadabra—from the song’s lyrics to the music video—is permeated with deep occult symbolism, and it starts with the song title.
Abracadabra

Written in the second century AD, Liber Medicinalis (“The Medical Book”) recommended using ABRACADABRA as an amulet against fever.
When most people think of ABRACADABRA, they picture a stage magician who makes bunnies appear from top hats during children’s birthday parties. However, the word has ancient, powerful, and kabbalistic roots. Theorized to originate from the Hebrew phrase “I will create as I speak,” ABRACADABRA is also believed to be closely related to the mystic Abraxas found on Gnostic amulets.
Throughout history, the word was associated with many magical practices, from warding off illnesses to summoning demons. In his classic work Dogma and Ritual, occultist Eliphas Levi explains the Kabbalistic meaning of the word.
The magic triangle of pagan theosophists was the celebrated ABRACADABRA, to which they attributed extraordinary virtues and represented as follows:
ABRACADABRA
ABRACADABR
ABRACADAB
ABRACADA
ABRACAD
ABRACA
ABRAC
ABRA
ABR
AB
AThe isolated A represents the unity of the first principle, otherwise, the intellectual or active agent. A united to B represents the fertilization of the duad by the monad. R is the sign of the triad, because it represents hieroglyphically the emission which results from the union of the two principles. The number 11, which is that of the letters of the word, combines the unity of the initiate with the denary of Pythagoras, and the number 66, the added total of all the letters, form kabalistically the number 12, which is the square of the triad and consequently the mystic quadrature of the circle.
We may remark, in passing, that the author of the Apocalypse, that key of the Christian Kabalah, composed the number of the beast, that is to say, of idolatry, by adding a 6 to the double senary of ABRACADABRA, which gives 18 kabalistically, the number attributed in the Tarot to the hieroglyphic sign of night and of the profane a mysterious and obscure number, the kabalistic key of which is 9, the number of initiation. On this subject the sacred Kabalist says expressly: “He that hath understanding” that is, the key of kabalistic numbers – “let him count the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man, and his number is six hundred three score and six.”
– Eliphas Levi, Ritual and Dogma
One takeaway from Levi’s dense explanation of ABRACADABRA is that it is related to the number of man – six hundred three score and six. That’s 666. Some call it the number of the beast.
Appropriately enough, Lady Gaga’s song Abracadabra directly refers to the Devil in the context of occult transformation.
Musical Spell
When Gaga says the song “has a spell in it,” she is not using a metaphor. She is being literal. The song’s chorus is:
Abracadabra, amor-oo-na-na
Abracadabra, morta-oo-ga-ga
Abracadabra, abra-oo-na-na
In her tongue she said, “Death or love tonight”
The magical words “amor” and “morta” are Latin for “love” and “death.” They are reused in the last line while alluding to a woman “speaking in tongues” – a practice that is associated with demonic possession.
As Gaga sings these words, the music video symbolically portrays a transformative ritual under the watchful eyes of a “Lady in Red” – with hints of demonic possession.

The video begins with a Lady in Red (played by Gaga) overlooking an army of minions looking to impress her.

Wearing a very pointy hat, the Lady in Red says: “The category is … Dance or Die.”

Underneath her are dancers, including Lady Gaga, all dressed in white.
From this context, we gather that the Lady in Red presides over these people and is about to judge their “performance.” However, this is more than a dance act; it is an occult ritual.
This is further highlighted by the sigil-like thing that we see immediately after.

Reminiscent of sigils and amulets, this image combines the words ABRACADABRA with Lady Gaga to announce the start of the ritual. The inverted letters allude to a demonic element.
In occult symbolism, red is the color of sacrifice and initiation. The Lady in Red is the agent of change, the force that is activated when the magic ritual is complete.
The Lady in Red watches the dancefloor from above, where a dualistic battle occurs between opposing forces: Light versus darkness, good versus evil, white against black.

At the beginning of the video, Gaga is dressed in white – the color of light and purity. The cross on Gaga’s white outfit emphasizes this fact.
While these dancers are dressed in white, their choreography alludes to gradual demonic possession.

For a few short seconds, we see Gaga quickly crawling backward. The possessed look on her face haunts me in my sleep.

Gaga’s odd positioning with a dancer creates a shape strikingly similar to Sigil of Lucifer.
Appropriately enough, the song’s first verse refers to the devil.
Pay the toll to the angels
Drawin’ circles in the clouds
Keep your mind on the distance
When the devil turns around
In this enigmatic verse, Gaga paints a dualistic picture (angels versus devil) as she embarks on a “magical” path. The video visually depicts this duality by opposing light with darkness.

Opposing the white-clad dancers are black-clad dancers who exude an opposite “energy.”
This group emulates the movements of an old person and integrates canes into its dance routine. Opposed to the spiritual immortality of light, darkness is afflicted with the physical limitations of the material world, where the unrelenting progress of time leads to aging and death. In esoteric symbolism, this concept is associated with Saturn (the god of Death and old age) and Satan, the ruler of the material world.
In Abracadabra, the dancefloor is the ritual surface on which opposing forces collide to form magic. The pre-chorus says:
With a haunting dance, now you’re both in a trance
It’s time to cast your spell on the night

The concept of duality could not be more evident as the dark and light groups are juxtaposed in successive shots as they alternatively chant “ABRACADABRA.”
The concept of a dancefloor being a ritual site has been around the music industry for decades.

The cover of Michael Jackson’s Blood on the Dancefloor contains the same ritualistic symbolism as Abracadabra. Jackson stands on a Masonic dualistic floor wearing a bright red outfit. The title refers to initiation and blood sacrifice during the ritual.
After alternating light and darkness, the music stops, and frenzied dancers yell the song’s magical words at Gaga.

They all look possessed.
Some observers might ask, “Why is she wearing a cross in this occult and satanic context?” Well, as in everything else in the video, that cross has an occult meaning.

Gaga wears a custom cross that is made of her face. This is not about Jesus. It is about the ultimate goal of occultism: To obtain godhood through one’s own means.
While, in interviews, Gaga says that the song is about “dealing with challenges” and other platitudes, the lyrics point strongly towards a specific spiritual direction. Here are some of the lyrics:
Hold me in your heart tonight
In the magic of the dark moonlight
This is about black magic.
Feel the beat under your feet, the floor’s on firе
The floor on fire is a reference to hell, the place where sinners are sent to after death. Speaking of witch (not a typo), Gaga sings these words in the final part of the song.
Phantom of the dance floor, come to me
Sing for me a sinful melody
In short, this song is about dealing with the dark side. Is it possible that the Lady in Red that Gaga is attempting to please is actually Satan?

After the performance, Gaga awaits the Lady in Red’s reaction. She somberly bows her head down, a gesture open for interpretation.

In the video’s final shot, Gaga looks up to the Lady in Red (possibly Satan).
As above, so below.
In Conclusion
From the song’s title to the contents of the lyrics, while not forgetting the blatant symbolism of its video, Abracadabra has a deep, magical meaning. As Gaga chants an incantation disguised as a chorus, the video depicts an occult ritual disguised as choreography. This is all done through symbolism, where dancers dressed in black and white represent the dualistic battle between light and darkness and good and evil. From this union of opposite forces emerges a third entity: Magic – the force occultists believe turns humans into gods – represented by the color red.
While Gaga was profusely praised for her “creativity,” this video offers absolutely nothing new. It reuses the same symbolism and color codes that have been explained on this site numerous times.
There is a reason why this specific symbolism is all over popular culture: It is the religion of the occult elite. But they do not want the masses to understand it – they merely wish for us to be dazed, confused, and bewitched by their witchcraft.
More importantly, they do not want to conduct their rituals behind closed doors anymore; they want to perform them on a worldwide scale. Ultimately, it is about them trying to please their worldly ruler – who gave them wealth and power on Earth – the same way Gaga tries to please the Lady in Red.
