Mumia Abu Jamal and Jamal Ibn Mumia, means Mumia, father of Jamal, and Jamal, son of Mumia – father and son, an unbreakable bond.

by Jamal Ibn Mumia

In a time when voices against injustice are louder than ever, the Bay Area community — and beyond — is rising to support a cause that echoes through the corridors of history and human rights. Freedom From Frame-Up Foundation, Inc., a 501(c)(3) tax exempt non-profit organization, an organization devoted to challenging wrongful convictions and systemic injustice, has launched the revolutionary “Mumia Freedom Tour” in honor of political prisoner Mumia Abu Jamal. As a Black Panther Party member and a Father, Grandfather, and Great-grandfather, a man whose legacy is as much about his enduring spirit as it is about the injustice he has suffered, Mumia represents the plight of countless innocent individuals imprisoned by a rigged system.

A Movement Rooted in Community and Truth in the Bay Area, the heartbeat of a progressive community, the launch of the Mumia Freedom Tour has ignited a spark of hope and determination. Local organizers, supporters, revolutionaries and activists have rallied together, transforming community spaces into hubs of political discourse, educational forums, and dynamic fundraising events.

The Mumia Birthday Freedom Dinner Fundraiser at the African American Art and Culture Complex, 762 Fulton St., San Francisco, on April 24, 2025, held in honor of Mumia’s 71st birthday in the Bay Area. Hear Mumia’s eldest son, Jamal Ibn Mumia, and one of his previous attorneys, Rachel Wolkenstein; both will be there in person. Both will share their perspectives on Mumia’s urgent need for medical treatment, and Rachel will touch on the legal facts of his innocence and frame-up and political law-fare of his case.

This event will be hosted by the Bay Area’s very own Meres-Sia Gabriel, the playwright, vocalist and educator, and catered by Samara Southern Creations. Go online and get your tickets now, on Instagram @MUMIAFREEDOMTOUR in our bio link. The tour’s mission is simple yet profound: to expose the political frame-up that has long silenced the innocent and to create a robust, sustainable movement that fights for the rights of those who have been wrongfully convicted.

Medical update: Mumia urgent needs eye surgery

During a recent prison visit to SCI (State Correctional Institution) Mahanoy in March 2025 watching my father, Mumia Abu Jamal, interacting with his great-grandchildren, I was filled with love, admiration and a deep concern for his declining health. Most noticeably, his vision has drastically worsened. His eye lens is extremely damaged and needs to be replaced as cataract and glaucoma have set in, making his vision deteriorate at rapid speed.

We must raise the needed funds and medical urgency. The prison is refusing to give him the needed treatment to fight this extreme medical neglect issue. Now is the time to contact Pennsylvania Gov. Shapiro and demand that he intervene at the State Correctional Institution Mahanoy to stop this cruel medical neglect. Give Mumia the urgent eye surgery he deserves to save his eyesight.

As I closely observed Mumia with his great-grandchildren, I could see how rapidly it is deteriorating. We need your help by becoming a one-time donor or recurring contributor for Mumia Medical Surgery Emergency on our Instagram donation link @MUMIAFREEDOMTOUR. Each contribution helps finance critical legal actions aimed at overturning wrongful convictions and urgent medical intervention, advocacy and investigation to protect individuals from deliberate medical neglect.

At the core of the Freedom From Frame-Up Foundation, Inc., a 501(c)(3) tax exempt non-profit organization, is the unwavering belief that no person should suffer for a crime they did not commit. So many of our political prisoners are left in these prison dungeons with severe medical neglect and ailments that become life-changing overnight.

The only lifeline they have is this movement of power to the people. We will not leave them behind. We will continue to advocate and fight for their human rights, holding their adversaries accountable and demanding their freedom and addressing their health issues. Our organization has comprehensive programs designed to scrutinize wrongful convictions, provide investigations, legal advice and assistance on a case-by-case basis and educate the public. The foundation’s efforts begin with Mumia Abu Jamal — a man whose life has been marked by both resistance and perseverance — and extend to every individual who has been caught in the crossfire of systemic injustice.

Mumia was wrongfully convicted of a crime he did not commit — a conviction born of political law-fare and deliberate frame-up prosecution that was unlawfully weaponized by the legal “justice” system to secure a false conviction in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His story, from his beginning as a young journalist reporting to the people about police racial terror, brutality and corruption, targeted and marked by decades of struggle and resilience, serves as a powerful symbol of the systemic failures that continue to tarnish our legal institutions still 43 years later today.

The Mumia Freedom Tour is not merely an event; it is a call to arms, an invitation for communities across major cities, starting in the Bay Area, to stand together, to educate and to actively participate in a movement designed to reinvigorate and restore dignity, freedom and justice. A Movement Rooted in Community and Truth. In the Bay Area, the heartbeat of a progressive community, the launch of the Mumia Freedom Tour home of the Panthers will be making stops: in East Oakland at the Brotherhood of Elders Network, Eastside Arts Alliance, 2277 International Blvd; Santa Rosa Junior College, 680 Sonoma Mountain Parkway, Petaluma; East Oakland Library, 88th Avenue in the Elmhurst District.

The tour’s mission is simple yet profound: to expose the political frame-up that has long silenced the innocent and to create a robust, sustainable movement that fights for the rights of those who have been wrongfully convicted. Empowering Through Education and Advocacy. The Mumia Freedom Tour is an educational platform that brings together scholars, legal experts, revolutionaries, community leaders and everyday citizens.

Through public forums, panel discussions and interactive workshops, the tour aims to shed light on the dark corners of the legal system, revealing how political agendas and law-fare have systematically deprived the innocent of their liberty. These sessions, held in community centers, libraries, and college campuses, are designed to inform, empower and inspire change.

One of the Tour’s stops in East Oakland is the Brotherhood of Elders Network, Eastside Arts Alliance, 2277 International Blvd, for public panel discussions with the youth and local supporters. Another of the tour’s key stops is at the local library in East Oakland’s Elmhurst District on 88th Avenue. Here, community members can engage in thought-provoking conversations and discussions centered on the history of wrongful convictions, the role of political activism, and the urgent need for legal reforms.

By exploring the narrative of Mumia Abu Jamal — his trial, his conviction, and his decades-long struggle — the tour creates an environment where the public can critically analyze the intersection of law, politics and human rights. At a nearby junior college in Santa Rosa, the tour takes a dynamic turn by involving young activists and future leaders in the fight for justice. Students, faculty and local residents gather to participate in interactive workshops that break down the complexities of the legal system and expose the realities of wrongful imprisonment. This engagement is crucial, as it lays the foundation for a future where legal advocacy is driven by informed, passionate and resilient individuals who understand the true cost of injustice.
